Anderson, Currie, Ferris, Lomu, Malone & Moga Earn Week 12 Ed Doherty Award Nomination Medallions

PHOENIX, Ariz. – November 8, 2022 – The Grand Canyon State Gridiron Club (GCSGC) is pleased to announce the recipients of the Week 12 Ed Doherty Award Nomination Medallions™. Six players are recognized for outstanding play during their respective games on Friday, November 4, 2022: Brendan Anderson (Sr. QB – Mountain Ridge); Myseth Currie (Sr. WR – Cesar Chavez); Brady Ferris (Sr. RB – Willow Canyon); Caleb Lomu (Sr. OL – Highland); Jamar Malone II (Soph. QB – Higley); and Luke Moga (Jr. QB – Sunnyslope).
Four of the six players were named on the 71-player Week 3 Watch List™ released on September 6, 2022. All six players will receive their Nomination Medallions at an upcoming school event this week. By earning Ed Doherty Award Nomination Medallions, they will attend the end of season Ed Doherty Award Luncheon on December 17, 2022, where one athlete will become the recipient of the Ed Doherty Award.
Details on their individual performances on November 4th are as follows:
Brendan Anderson – Sr. QB – Mountain Ridge
Anderson helped the Mountain Lions rebound from consecutive losses with a big 49-7 victory over Westview. He was 22 of 28 for 200yds and 4TDs, and added a rushing TD all in the first half!
Myseth Currie – Sr. WR – Cesar Chavez
Currie hauled in 13 receptions for 223yds and 2TDs in the Champions 45-36 win over Desert Vista. His 47 catches for 960 total yards on the season moved him into 2nd in receiving yards for 6A.
Brady Ferris – Sr. RB – Willow Canyon
Ferris followed his 305yd/4TD effort in Week 11 with another outstanding game rushing for 163yds and 2TDs in the Wildcats' 42-14 win over Ironwood.
Caleb Lomu – Sr. OL – Highland
The 6-3 Hawks have grinded out over 1,600yds on the ground this season behind Lomu, one of the top offensive linemen in the state. Whether protecting his QB or opening holes for the RBs, Lomu has been a standout every game for Highland.
Jamar Malone II – Soph. QB – Higley
Malone completed 26 of 37 passes for 342yds and 5TDs in the Knights 52-7 win over Campo Verde. He added 2 rushing scores to help Higley improve to 7-2 on the season.
Luke Moga – Jr. QB – Sunnyslope
Not all games are won with stats and sometimes leadership shines brightly in big games. With the Vikings season on the line, Moga was 12 for 21 passing for 159yds and a TD, while leading two 4th quarter scoring drives to knock off #1 Desert Mountain 23-20.

For 37 years, the Ed Doherty Award has been the State of Arizona’s highest individual high school football honor and is awarded annually to the state’s most outstanding high school football player by the Grand Canyon State Gridiron Club. The Ed Doherty Award recognizes the player whose performance best exhibits the pursuit of excellence with integrity. The winner of the award epitomizes great ability combined with diligence, perseverance, and hard work. In addition to on-field performance, the Ed Doherty Award recognizes the well-rounded accomplishments of community involvement, school pride, and academics.
